Accomplishments
- Raised two daughters as a single parent.
- First African American director of a program for Citizen's Planning and Housing Association, known as the Neighborhood Resource Bank (NRB). As director, coordinated the expansion of the NRB from a city-wide to a state-wide project now known as the Community Resource Bank of Maryland, and served as its first General Manager (1990).
- Formed the Coalition for Beautiful Neighborhoods (1990). This led to several coalitions that dealt with community concerns such as illegal billboards, nuisance abatement, and the illegal practices of liquor establishments.
- Founded the Southeast Stakeholders Coalition, a coalition of community groups in Southeast Baltimore (2001).
- Has served 3 terms as President of the McElderry Park Neighborhood Association for a total of 18 years.
- Implemented customized community development and leadership training programs for McElderry Park residents, such as family life learning skills, conflict resolution, personality assessment, crime prevention and strategy techniques, and leadership skills. This has created over three dozen block captains and leaders in McElderry Park (1999-present).
- Spearheaded, in conjunction with Reverend Karen Brau, vacant lot development projects such as The Amazing Port Street community garden and labyrinth (1998).
- Expanded the recycling campaign, and developed a community resource bank in Baltimore through the Mayor's Campaign for a Cleaner Baltimore (1991, 1992).
- Gained funding for numerous grant proposals from institutions such as: the Abell Foundation, Annie E. Casey Foundation, Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions, Sidran Institute (faith-based institution), the Baltimore Community Foundation, the Johns Hopkins Injury-Free Coalition for Kids.
- One of four Co-Investers in East Baltimore that were chosen by the Annie E. Casey Foundation to identify community residents (sparkplugs) to participate in the Real Time Community Change program. This program funds community outreach projects developed by the sparkplugs (2001-2004).
- Instrumental in increasing community awareness of the Brownfields and environmental issues. Participated in the development of environmental training programs for community residents both as a graduate and an instructor of the Civic Works B-More Green Brownfields and Environmental Training Program.
- The only African-American to sit on the board of Banner Neighborhoods Community Corporation, Inc. (communities surrounding the Patterson Park) since its existence in 1983, and serves as its vice-president.
- Has served on the Southeast Community Organization's (SECO) board twice for fifteen years.
- Serves as principal investigator on a $225,000 grant proposal in partnership with several departments of Johns Hopkins hospital for a community grassroots environmental and health education training program.
- Served as president of the Chapter 1 Parents' Council for the Tench Tilghman Elementary School (#13) for three years (1987-1989) while his daughters were students. Assisted in several grant funded projects, and provided numerous volunteer hours.
